Executive Summary
In democratic societies, consensus, trust and shared information are foundational. However, the spread of deepfakes, generated by AI, blurs the lines between the truth and deception, thereby undermining these democratic principles (Sierra, 2023). The lack of ability to distinguish between what is real and what is fake further diminishes trust in the voting process, ultimately endangering democracy itself (Sierra, 2023). This paper will consider the necessity for action to be taken in order to protect the foundations of democracy through regulation of the use of AI during elections.
